Doing a cleanse right...
From Butterfly Express (http://www.butterflyexpressions.org/Herbal/Cleanse.pdf)
For many years, herbal/alternative medicine has relied on cleanses to restore the body to balance and speed healing. Some of these cleanses can cause pretty severe symptoms and reactions, even the ones that have been in use for many years. Why is it that they seemed to work 50 years ago, but now make people so sick and even seem to do more harm than good in the long run sometimes?
I think that the explanation for this can be found by comparing our world today with the world in which the famous, old-time herbal doctors lived. More and more people today live away from the earth and pollutants and poisons are a part of our everyday lives. Chemical fertilizers and weed sprays have increased. We add chemicals to our water and hormones to our meat. And then there are the drugs that most people take so routinely that they often don’t even consider them to be drugs anymore. I am often amused—and saddened—when I visit the medicine cabinet of a family who has recently gone herbal. Too often it is still full of allergy pills, throat sprays, non-herbal cough medicines, pain killers, fever reducers, headache remedies, and laxatives, to name a few.
We use learning games in our family as part of homeschooling "curriculum." I found this game while searching for resources to learn about medicinal herbs. Wildcraft is now one of my family's favorite games!
This game is definitely NOT just for kids. It is for the whole family. I have learned more from this game than I ever imagined.
Play is the first way kids learn. They will have a blast with Wildcraft and learn along the way!!
As we get ready for the next year of conferences I am working on a special kit that hits close to home. All of the kits do but this one in particular because it is geared towards helping one overcome emotional and mental obstacles.
My family has been homeschooling for the past 4 years. We started our homeschooling journey because of things I was noticing with my children. My youngest daughter was in first grade at the time. She came home crying almost everyday because of her teacher yelling at her. She would miss out on recess frequently because she didn't get her work done on time. Only a short time into homeschooling I recognized that she has dyslexia, just like her grandma and cousin.
My oldest daughter was in third grade and was sent to the principle's office on a regular basis for physical altercations. She was also kicked out of preschool because her teacher suspected she had autism and couldn't handle her.
While these were enough for me to recognize the need to take them out of public school our family's health was also a big concern. My family was constantly sick. Illnesses were constantly being passed around and around school, church, the neighborhood, and our family. I was sick of being sick.
I started learning about essential oils and medicinal herbs during our homeschooling journey. We are not sick nearly as much as we used to be. I've been able to find ways to help my daughter with her dyslexia and finding confidence in herself. My oldest daughter is able to deal with her emotions in a way that benefits her instead of being her punished. My young sons have grown up at home instead of a school room.
The essential oils in this kit have helped my family and I hope they help yours too.
If you have struggled in any way please be willing and open minded to trying something new.
The Confidence Kit includes essential oils geared towards helping ADHD, Apergers, Autism, Anxiety, Anger, Concentration, Focus, Balance and more. It will be available in the store soon!!
The oils – 5 to 10 drops of each:
Frankincense – the miracle oil – a wonderful anti-inflammatory and great for trauma.
Lavender – gentle enough for kids and sensitive skin issues like burns, cute or abrasions, also calming so it’s a great idea to diffuse or let the child smell the oils as well.
Tea Tree – documented to kill many bacteria, viruses, and fungi on contact so it is excellent for cuts, wounds, burns, and anywhere that bacteria might be found. It has a historical use as an antiseptic for the face, skin disorders including acne, and dandruff as well.
Fill the rest of the way with fractionated coconut oil. Fractionated coconut oil is an all-natural carrier oil that readily absorbs into the skin making it an ideal oil for topical therapies. Its feather-light emollient effect provides a soothing barrier without clogging pores and is excellent for dry or troubled skin. It leaves skin feelings silky smooth and not greasy like other vegetable carrier oils. It is completely soluble with all essential oils and is colorless, odorless, and will not stain or go rancid.
Oils begin to break down when mixed with a carrier oil so if you don’t think you will use this spray up in about a month-6 weeks adjust the quantities to make up a smaller batch. www.butterflyexpress.org
Alcohol Tinctures from http://www.butterflyexpressions.org/Herbal/Tinctures.pdf
Already made tinctures available in the store!!
The liquid medium into which the herb is placed to make a tincture is called the menstrum; the herb is known as the marc. For internal use, the menstrum can be alcohol, apple cider vinegar, or vegetable glycerine. A good rule of thumb for beginners is, “When in doubt, use alcohol.” The medicinal properties of most herbs are pulled out best in an alcohol tincture. If the alcohol content concerns you, place the drops of tincture you need into very hot water to administer them. The heat will dissipate the alcohol entirely. (There is more alcohol in over-the-counter cold medicine, even ones meant for children, than you will typically ingest when taking herbal tinctures.)
One hundred proof Vodka (50% alcohol/50% water) is ideal for herbal tinctures, especially herbals that are the root of the plant. The less expensive eighty proof vodka (40% alcohol/60% water) is acceptable for most herbs. When you need to add water to any tincture, distilled or filtered water is absolutely essential. Vinegar is used, undiluted, in the strength commonly sold.
Measure your herb into a glass jar with a well-fitting lid. Add your menstruum (alcohol or vinegar) so that it covers the herb plus an extra inch, put on the lid and then shake very well. Set in a cool place out of direct sunlight—but not “out of sight, out of mind”. I put mine on my bathroom counter so I can shake it every morning while getting ready for the day. Always check your tincture after 24 hours to make sure all of the herb is still covered with liquid. Any exposed parts will probably mold and ruin the entire batch. You will need to shake this concoction at least once per day for the next 10 to 14 days. Add more liquid at any time if the mixture looks dry or if some of the herb is sticking up out of the liquid. Let the mixture sit for the next six weeks. Mark on your calendar when it is time to strain so you don't forget it (like I do).
Follow the next steps once the six weeks have passed.
An alcohol tincture is taken 12 to 20 drops in a little bit of water. It is usually advisable to take tinctures along with a meal. The nutrients are more likely to be absorbed that way. With something in your stomach, the tincture will be less likely to cause an upset tummy. Depending on the severity of the problem, tinctures should be taken 2 to 5 times a day.
Tinctures are administered in drops, and at least half of those few drops are just water if you used vodka to make the tincture. The alcohol consumed when taking an herbal remedy is negligible. It is far less than that contained in over the counter remedies such as cold and cough remedies, even those for children. In fact, you will be consuming less alcohol taking herbal remedies that you consume when adding vanilla to your favorite frosting recipe.
Alcohol dissipates very rapidly with heat. Since you will be adding the tincture to a couple of tablespoons of water to take it anyway, just make sure the water is very hot when you put the tincture into it. The alcohol will dissipate instantly. You will have completely eliminated the alcohol with this simple step.
