When we lived in Idaho we ordered a couple bare root elderberry plants and planted them in our backyard up against the house. We had no idea how big they would get or how many berries they would produce. I just knew that elderberries are good for you and I was trying to be more self-sufficient! They didn't grow much that first year but the second year they took off!! They were HUGE! They came up to the kitchen window! They were covered with bunches of beautiful white flowers that eventually turned into purple black tiny berries.
We ended up moving to Arizona only a year later in the middle of the summer before our second harvest of elderberries. I was so bummed!!
I never lost my love of elderberries and have had to resort to buying them dried. Although, I did hear a rumor there are wild elderberries south of us further up the mountain!
My go to place for ordering dried herbs is Butterfly Express! But, I've been able to find comparable prices at Mountain Rose Herbs as well. I switch between the two companies when one is sold out or another's price is just a bit lower.
